About

The Semaphore Information & Eco Centre in the Masonic Buildings on Semaphore Road is an exciting new community owned enterprise.

Semaphore Information & Eco Centre integrates businesses, tourism, retail, entertainment, community history, heritage, volunteers, sustainability, energy efficiency, zero waste, marine life and climate change issues in a one-stop shop for Port Adelaide, Semaphore and Largs Bay.

Community volunteers have formed a new not-for-profit five-year lease on premises in the heritage listed buildings at a low rental and have the full support of the owner, the Semaphore Masonic Lodge.

The Palais Hotel initially donated $5000 to the company and volunteers been raising a further $20,000 through $200 donations donation to the continuing operation of this centre over the next five years.

All donors to this community project are being permanently listed in the Semaphore Information Centre and will have the opportunity to participate in a range of promotions, events and activities.

Also our first funding of $3000 from the South Australian Government, presented by the Minister for Environment and Conservation, the Hon Jay Weatherill.

The centre is staffed by a growing group of well-qualified local volunteers, and senior High School students now have the opportunity to gain work experience there.

It is a completely new non-profit community initiative, with a new type of leadership that other Australian and some overseas communities may also adopt.

The centre will be of great benefit to Semaphore, Largs Bay and Port Adelaide, and is to work closely with the Port Adelaide Visitor Centre and a wide range of local community groups in attracting more visitors to our district.

The Semaphore Information & Eco Centre also has the use of the Masonic Hall to stage a series of events, workshops and networking functions including a monthly Sunday Food Exchange and a Winter Solstice Banquet fund-raiser.

The Eco Centre section of the enterprise is a first response bureau for all sustainability, conservation, alternative energies including wind and solar, zero waste and other climate change information.

We are expanding our database, and creating a communications network, working closely with the city of Port Adelaide Enfield in this important area.

Nobody involved in the set-up and running of this project will be paid, as every member of the volunteer team is doing what they are doing for the community.
